Chenyi (also known as Cheyne) is a concert pianist and dedicated teacher based in Toronto, with a rich background that spans Taipei, Boston, and New York. Born to Taiwanese and Japanese parents, she has captivated audiences across North America, Japan, and Taiwan, including a critically acclaimed performance of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach at Seully Hall, Boston Conservatory. Her talents have also graced the stage at Steinway Hall in New York City, and she has had the honor of participating in a seminar with the legendary András Schiff at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. Since relocating to Toronto in 2013, Chenyi has continued to enrich the musical community through both her performances and her commitment to teaching. Chenyi holds a Doctor of Education in Music from Columbia University in New York, where her dissertation, “The Effect of Touch on Tone Production on a Grand Piano,” explored the nuances of performance practice and historical studies in piano playing. Her research was greatly influenced by interviews with renowned New York-based master teacher Seymour Bernstein. In addition to her doctorate, Chenyi earned both her Master and Bachelor of Music degrees in Piano Performance from The Boston Conservatory, where she was a recipient of the Alfred E. Lee Piano Scholarship. As an educator, Chenyi brings a wealth of experience and a passion for fostering musical growth in her students. Her teaching approach is rooted in several key areas: music cognitive development for children and young adults, creativity in music learning, the correlation between music and related arts, and the development of musicianship through piano pedagogy. While her primary focus is on classical music, she is particularly skilled in preparing students for the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams, across all levels, including the Artist Diploma program. Chenyi also offers online tutoring to help students prepare for these exams, ensuring they are fully equipped to excel in their musical journey.
